Sara
My thoughts drifted to that night after service, the hunger in Jacob's touch and the way his lips had claimed my body. Just the memories made me tingle. Lying back on the bed, I held my side and sighed. If only he weren’t so worried about my ribs.
Courtesy of the truck ride yesterday, the injury was more aggravated then it had been. I’d tried hiding it. Shaking my head, I wondered if it was possible to hide anything from him. According to Elizabeth it wasn’t allowed. The way I saw it, I wasn’t lying. I was withholding information for the benefit of both of
us. By the way his breathing became labored and his body hardened that night at the clinic, I wasn’t the only one who wanted to make love.
It seemed as if it didn’t matter if I told Jacob what I was thinking or not; he knew. Somehow he always seemed to know, sometimes even before I did. Maybe it was because we’d been together so long.
If only I could remember how long.
The sound of the rising garage door pulled me from my carnal thoughts, and I covered my cheeks. With a giggle I hoped they weren’t as flushed as they felt. If they were, he would know what I’d been thinking . . . I shook my head. I didn’t want that conversation. Exhaling, I willed the pink away.
When I heard the garage door lowering, I stood and made my way toward the stairs. Wearing the boot on my right foot made walking with my cast much easier. As I approached the landing, I took a deep breath and visualized the stairs. Since I’d counted them multiple times, I knew there were fifteen steps. I might not have my sight, but I was trying to be as self-sufficient as possible. I made it only to the second step from the top when I heard his voice.
“Sara?”
“I’m coming down,” I called, taking one step at a time, cautious not to go too fast.
Even before I reached the bottom step, I knew he was there. When we went to service, I’d realized why I associated him with the scent of leather; it was his coat. When he wasn’t wearing it, just the right amount of aroma lingered around him. When he wore it, as now, the leather scent was overpowering. That, plus the sound of his boots walking and stopping on the wood floor, prompted me to stop on the fourteenth step. If I went one more, I was afraid I’d run into him.
“Sara.” His voice came from very close.
Gripping the banister, I tilted my face toward his. Smiling and hoping my cheeks had returned to their normal color, I replied, “Yes?”
“Did you hear the garage door go up?”
“Yes.”
“And what did you think that meant?”
“I assumed it meant you were here.”
“So you knew I was home and yet you chose to not greet me?”
What the hell?
“Answer me,” he demanded, his tone now too calm. “Why weren’t you waiting for me at the door?”
The thoughts I’d entertained upstairs evaporated. I knew this tone. I not only recognized it, but with everything in me, I wanted to avoid it. My heartbeat quickened and my mouth dried like the Sahara. “I was on my—”
Interrupting, he rebuked, “On your way is not there, waiting as you’re supposed to be. When I return, I expect to find you waiting for me, greeting your husband.”
The bubble of apprehension that had waned and waxed in my chest since I awoke nearly three weeks earlier began to grow. “At the door . . . wh . . . I’m sorry . . . I didn’t know . . . you didn’t tell me to—”
He grasped my arm, the harsh movement a stark contrast to the eerie calmness of his voice. “Do tell, Sara, are you blaming me for your forgetfulness?”
What the hell is his problem?
“I’m sorry,” I pleaded. “I’m not blaming . . . I didn’t remember. If you told me . . . from now on, I’ll do it.”
“Must I remind you of everything?”
“I’m trying to remember; I am. I’ll be there from now on, at the door, when you come home.”
“Perhaps you need a reminder?”
My body sagged and my knees weakened. The bubble within me grew and popped, filling my nervous system with dread. “No. I don’t need a reminder. I’ll remember from now on. Please give me another chance.” If it hadn’t been for his iron grip on my forearm, I might have fallen to the step where I stood.
If I had, I wasn’t sure if it would have been because of the sudden dizziness his tone induced, the bout of trembling, or that it would’ve enabled me to beg. It wasn’t something I was proud of considering, but to avoid his belt, at that moment, I was willing.
“Sara, go to the door.”
Inhaling more pleas, I nodded. When he released my arm, I stepped down and down again. Around the steps, past the closet, I found the door between the living quarters and the garage.
He was right behind me, his voice still eerily calm. “You may stand or kneel; the choice has always been yours.”
I swallowed the vile bile bubbling from my stomach. In that moment I couldn’t for the life of me fathom that merely minutes ago I had been having pleasant thoughts about this man. I also couldn’t imagine kneeling.
Who does that?
I brought my feet together, straightened my neck, and said, “I’ll stand, thank you.”
He reached for my chin and lowered it.
“This is where you are to be when I arrive, and if you choose to stand, your head will be bowed.”
“Yes, Jacob.”

Every ounce of composure I gathered inside the bathroom left me as soon as I stepped foot into his office again. Mason stood, leaning against the wall adjacent to the bathroom door. He’d removed his black suit jacket, and was wearing a crisp white button down. His tie had been removed. I could see the definition of his biceps and his hardened abs through his shirt. He stared down at me hungrily as he prowled toward me. My eyes widened for a split second as he came closer, and in response, I took a few steps backwards until I felt my back against the wall. My breathing quickened as his body now pressed against mine, pinning me to the wall. I couldn’t escape- not that I wanted to. His gaze alone entranced me, and left my insides smoldering. The scent of him clouded my senses as the heat of his body overtook me. The lace underneath my pencil skirt was officially wet. For those few seconds, as anticipation increased, I gazed up into his light brown eyes. There was a darkness in those eyes. Lust. If words weren’t going to convince me to accept his terms, then he was going to show me. I knew this, but I didn’t care. His arms wrapped around me, the strength of his body overpowering me. His lips crashed down on mine, and I savored his taste. His lips enveloped mine while both of his hands flattened against the wall, not allowing me to move. His kiss was heated and passionate, yet tender. I felt a force stronger than any magnetic pull as he consumed me. Words can’t begin to describe how he’d captivated me, and I wondered if he felt the same pulse between us. He nibbled on my lower lip gently as his hands slid down my body. His tongue tenderly slipped between my lips, silently demanding I part for him. I opened my mouth for him and welcomed his tongue as it caressed the inside of my mouth. I ran my hands up and down his back and it only encouraged him to ravish me even more. I’d kissed two guys in my life before Mason, and I’d never felt such sensations from a kiss before. This was more than a kiss. This was indescribable. My body careened with desire against his. With his mouth still possessing mine, he took my hand and placed it on the bulge of his pants. “Feel what you do to me,” his voice was raw in my ear. My heart was rampant as I felt the large, tented bulge in my hand. Solid and rock hard, for me. I stopped breathing for a second. Before I knew what was happening, he’d bunched my skirt around my waist and pressed his knee between my legs to hold me in place. His hands reached around my backside, gripped me, and he lifted me up as though I weighed no more than a feather. “Wrap your legs around me, sweetness,” he whispered in my ear before returning his lips to mine. Immediately I wrapped my legs around him and kissed him with lustful intensity as he carried me to the oversized white leather sofa situated on the other side of his office. He sat down, leading me to straddle his lap. I felt the thick hardness beneath his black pants. A soft moan escaped my lips as his hardness pressed against my wet lace, rubbing me right… ohhhh there. Ah! I lightly rubbed myself on his tented shaft and it caused me to ache with need. Based on what I was feeling beneath me he was too big to fit inside me. His lips finally left mine and he trailed licks and kisses down my neck as his fingers slipped beneath my lace panties. He grunted as he felt how damp my panties were. His thumb and forefinger rubbed my clit, soft at first, and then he quickly adopted a rougher tempo as he rubbed me and flicked me, making me so wet and swollen. I’d never experienced such aching desire as I did with this man. “Oh Jill. You’re soaked for me,” he whispered into my ear. I moaned softly at his touch. “You need to be fucked. Hard. You have no idea what I have planned for this sweet little body.” His thumb and forefinger massaged my bud, and then he slipped a finger into my heat. I let out a breathy moan into his ear, and it only encouraged him. Then he slipped a second finger into me. I buried my face in his neck and moaned from the pleasurable pressure he applied to me down there. I felt him grow and harden beneath his pants. “You’re so tight,” he said between kisses down my neck. His fingers moved in and out of me rapidly and I mewled in his ear. “When’s the last time you were fucked good and hard?”

Damn, how was he letting a woman affect him in this way? There was no doubt that Grace was a sexy woman, and she did everything to stir up feelings of lust, but he wasn’t the type to get caught up in thinking long term. Long distance relationships never worked. He had to think of ways to keep this light, have a fun few months with her, and part as good friends. It always worked well with others, but she was so different and he was having trouble figuring out how he would ever let her go if he even had the opportunity to catch her.
He checked his watch again, his leg bouncing on the barstool in anticipation over Grace’s arrival. She had texted him letting him know they were running late, so he had sent the shuttle back to get them despite her protests. He wasn’t going to let her get away that easily.
Josh sat beside Evan and scratched under the stethoscope that hugged his neck. “I fucking hate Halloween,” Josh groaned as he drank from a bottle of water.
Evan smirked as he kept his eyes roaming the crowded bar. “Well, at least you made a little effort, Doctor McKenzie.”
“I’m not one for flash.”
“No shit, really?” Evan snickered. He tugged on the gear of his SWAT uniform he had borrowed from their props department. The camouflage pants and military green shirt were fine except for the heavy ballistics vest he wore. There was still no sign of her. He leaned over and nudged at Josh’s arm. “Listen, if you see Grace around other guys, keep an eye on her.”
“Other guys?”
“You know, just take care of her for me.”
Josh smiled slyly at Evan. “Shit. Zach was right, then.”
“What? I was actually right about something?” Zach approached with a drink in hand and gave it over to Evan.
“I’m not sure. What exactly is he right about, Josh?” He sipped on his Old Fashioned slowly.
Josh shook his head and pointed to Evan with his thumb. “This guy just asked me to keep an eye on Grace.”
“Boom! You owe me a crispy, new one hundred dollar bill, you fucker!” Zach punched Josh’s shoulder.
Evan stared in confusion. “You going to tell me what this is all about?”
“Zach said you had it bad for the little romance author next door. I just assumed you wanted to sample and get her out of your system. Didn’t think you were actually serious about her.”
“I’m not serious, guys,” Evan contended, trying to contain his embarrassment.
Zach grinned. “You’d never care if it was just someone you wanted to get out of your system. Right?” Evan sighed. “Guys, it’s not like that. Grace is a nice girl. I don’t want dickheads like Ben and Ryan bothering her all night.”
“Sure.”
“You’re one to talk, Josh. You still obsessing over Red?”
“Don’t call her that,” Josh grumbled, pointing to Zach with an intimidating look.
“You let Evan call her that.”
Josh puffed out his chest, crossing his arms. “Because I know he’s not lusting after her the way you are.”
“Dude, I haven’t even met her, you prick.”
“What woman doesn’t Zach lust over, Josh?” Evan chuckled as he put down his empty glass on the bar and stood up. “Anyway, just look after her, guys. I might be pulled away and I don’t want idiots bothering her.”
“Like they’re bothering her now?” Zach tipped his chin to the other side of the bar. “Grace’s been here at least twenty minutes. I thought you knew that though.”

Prologue

Dusty, empty shoe boxes, stacked taller and wider than her slim body, wobbled as she pressed her back against them, tucking her bony knees into her chest.
Breathe. Just Breathe. Breathe.
Wedged in the back of the dingy closet, she didn’t dare make a sound as she sucked her lower lip between her teeth. Focusing on forcing every grimy breath into her lungs, she felt tears well in her eyes.
Oh gosh, she’d made such a big mistake, and Miss Becky was right. She was a bad girl.
She’d reached for the dirty and stained cookie jar earlier, the one shaped like a teddy bear that hid cookies that tasted funny. She wasn’t supposed to get cookies or any food by herself, but she’d just been so hungry that her tummy hurt, and Miss Becky was sick again, napping on the couch. She hadn’t meant to knock the ashtray off the counter, shattering it into tiny pieces. Some were shaped like icicles that clung to the roof during the winter. Others were no bigger than chips.
All she’d wanted was a cookie.
Her slender shoulders jerked at the sound of the all cracking on the other side of the closet. She bit down harder on her lip. A metallic taste burst into her mouth. Tomorrow there would be a hold the size of Mr. Henry’s big hand in the plaster, and Miss Becky would cry and she’d get sick again.
The soft creak of the closet door was like a crack of thunder to her ears.
Oh no, no, no…
He wasn’t supposed to find her in here. This was her safe place whenever Mr. Henry was angry or when he—
She tensed, eyes peeling wide as a body taller and broader than hers slipped inside and then knelt in front of her. In the dark, she couldn’t make out much of his features, but she knew in her belly and her chest who it was.
“I’m sorry,” she gasped.
“I know.” A hand settled on her shoulder, the weight reassuring. He was the only person she felt okay with when he touched her. “I need you to stay in here, ‘kay?”
Miss Becky had said once that he was only six months older than her six years, but he always seemed so much bigger, older than her, because in her eyes, he took up her entire world.
She nodded.
“Don’t come out,” he said, and then he pressed into her hands the redheaded doll she’d dropped in the kitchen after she broke the ashtray and rushed into the closet. Too frightened to retrieve her, she’d left Velvet where she had fallen, and she’d been so upset because the doll had been a gift from him many, many months before. She had no idea how he’d gotten Velvet, but one day he’d simply shown up with her, and she was hers, only hers.
“You stay in here. No matter what.”
Holding the doll close, clenched between her knees and chest, she nodded again.
He shifted, stiffening as an angry shout rattled the walls around them. It was her name that dripped ice down her spine; her name that was shouted so furiously.
A small whimper parted her lips and she whispered, “I just wanted a cookie.”
“It’s okay. Remember? I promised I’d keep you safe forever. Just don’t make a sound.” He squeezed her shoulder. “Just stay quiet, and when I…when I get back, I’ll read to you, ‘kay? All about the stupid rabbit.”
All she could do was nod again, because there had been times when she hadn’t stayed quiet and she’d never forgotten those consequences. But if she stayed quiet, she knew what was coming. He wouldn’t be able to read to her tonight. Tomorrow he would miss school and he wouldn’t be okay even though he would tell her he was.
He lingered for a moment and then he eased out of the closet. The bedroom door shut with a smack, and she lifted the doll, pressing her tearstained face into it. A button on Velvet’s chest poked at her cheek.
Don’t make a sound.
Mr. Henry started to yell.
Don’t make a sound.
Footsteps punched down the hall.
Don’t make a sound.
Flesh smacked. Something hit the floor, and Miss Becky must have been feeling better, because she was suddenly shouting, but in the closet the only sound that mattered was the fleshy whack that came over and over. She opened her mouth, screaming silently into the doll.
Don’t make a sound.

Exclusive Excerpt for Rekindled By CJ McKella

Rekindled by CJ McKella

Rekindled FOR WEB
excerpt
Tate
Tapping the microphone, feedback blares out of the speakers and people quickly put their hands to their ears until it dulls out. “Sorry about that,” my dad says, as he tilts the microphone down so that it’s right next to his mouth. “Hello, everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Johnny Corbin, and this here as you may know is my son, Tate. Many of you know him as the smoke jumper who keeps our town from being engulfed by flames. But tonight, my son and his beautiful girlfriend gave me some amazing news, and I wanted to share it with you all. Tonight, I found out that my son is engaged to be married!”
Cheers and hooting erupts from the crowd while a few of the guys from the crew start drumming on the tables. Trista throws me a wink, and I feel my cheeks heat from the attention.
“Now, if you could all please stand so I can officially make a toast.” People stand and raise their beverages in the air. “To my son and my future daughter-in-law, I love you both and couldn’t be happier for you. To Tate and Julia!”
“Tate and Julia!” The call rings out from the crowd while everyone slings back their drinks.
Tris, next round for everyone is on me!” my dad calls, which earns him roaring applause from the customers.
“I think you’ll probably regret paying for everyone’s round, Dad,” I raise the beer to my lips and look around at the packed room. “There’s at least fifty people in here.”
He grins as he steps off the stage. “It’s okay, you know Trista isn’t going to make me pay full price for it. Not if she wants our family gumbo recipe, that is.”
I shake my head and begin to laugh, but feel my throat constrict as people lower themselves back into their seats and my eye catches sight of the doorway. The acute tingle of apprehension prickles the hairs on the back of my neck and my hands turn cold and clammy as memories I’d long suppressed begin to slam into me.
The bottle slips from my fingers and I recognize the sound of shattering glass, followed by the familiar touch of Jules’ hand around my arm tugging me away from the broken bottle, but my mind is somewhere else entirely. My mind is back seven years ago, the last time I saw her.
“Tate, honey, are you okay?” Jules says lifting her hand and gently pressing the back of it against my forehead. “What’s going on? You look like you just saw a ghost.”
I want to answer her and tell her that I’m fine, but my entire body is in shock and the sight of those pale blue eyes is holding my brain hostage, making it impossible to speak. Her eyes lock with mine and a sharp pain pierces through my lungs as I suck in a sloppy breath.
I swallow and force myself to blink. “Callie,” I rasp out. “Callie’s back.”

Exclusive Excerpt: He grins at me and takes a step closer, reaching out for my hand and pulling it to his lips, kissing my knuckles. “Callie, I’m sorry,” he says, his breath feathering across my skin. “I didn’t mean what I said that day, back at the stadium.” “Then why did you say it?” He sighs and closes his eyes. “Because I’m an idiot. I saw that guy in his fancy suit with his expensive watch and gelled hair, and I was jealous. I looked at him and all I could see was Zach, and I panicked. You deserve the moon and the stars, and I’m never going to be that guy who can give you all those things.” “Tate, I don’t need someone to buy me pretty things. I had that, and you know what I learned? That it’s a very lonely existence. I had more jewelry than I knew what to do with, more shoes than I could wear in a month, but you know what I didn’t have? I didn’t have someone to share my day with as we lay in bed. I didn’t have someone whose kisses breathed life into my soul, and who made me feel alive.” “And do you have that now?” he asks as he leans forward and rests his forehead against mine, his lips just millimeters away from my own. “Do you have someone who makes your heart want to keep beating?” “I think I’m getting there. This guy I’m sort of dating is pretty incredible. You’d like him, he’s a smokejumper and a mechanic, and a pretty damn good kisser.” “Only pretty good?” “Eh, I’ve had better.” “Is that so? We’ll see about that.” His fingers fly out and grip the edges of my robe, pulling me closer to him as his lips press into mine. He nips at my bottom lip with his teeth and a moan slips out as my lips part, letting his tongue tease mine. Our tongues move against each other as my hands rake through his hair while pressing myself against his body, needing to be close to him. He smells like smoke and aftershave and it’s taking all my resolve not to rip off all this clothes and straddle him here on the kitchen floor. He pulls my bottom lip into his mouth and sucks on it making my head dizzy with need. When he pulls away, I whimper and I see a gleam of satisfaction in his eyes. His kisses set my heart on fire, and it’s the most delicious burn I’ve ever known.

Wrapping his arm around me, pulling me tighter, he lowers his head and whispers into my ear. “You’re not here for anyone other than me, short stuff. Now why don’t you finally admit it to yourself, ditch this guy, and go out on a date with me.” I let out an exaggerated sigh. He’s been saying stuff like this since day one. “Keep wishin’, player.” Leaning in even closer, I feel his grip tightening on my hip, his lips on the shell of my ear. “One day, you’re gonna go out with me, Renee. One day you’re gonna say you love me. One day you’re gonna brush your hot mouth across mine, across my hard-.” “Renee?” Oh. God. No. This can’t be happening. As soon as I hear the voice, I instantly close my eyes and pull myself from Ben’s tight grasp abruptly and look for the voice. David is standing merely four feet away, eyes moving between Ben and myself, confusion laced deep in them. “Am I interrupting?” Before David is even finished speaking, Ben places his hand on my shoulder and tries to pull me in close. The movement screams ownership, so much so that I want to pull a Wicked Witch of the West and dissolve into a puddle on the floor, removing myself completely from the situation. To bad we’re not in Kansas any more. When I finally think to say something, Ben beats me to the punch. “We’re getting ready to head up to our room.” Oh. My. God. Saying this in front of my date sends me over the edge. I pull my elbow forward and slam it back into his ribs as hard as I can. Satisfaction rings in my ears as I hear him grunting in pain. Unbelievably, every spot on my body was remotely touching his, protests the loss of heat. Traitorous body.
